# Napoli Afragola High-Speed Station

> For Astaldi, BIMON optimized the design of the Napoli Afragola high-speed station, designed by Zaha Hadid, around the construction activities. The BIM model of the whole work was used to resolve multidisciplinary clashes and to extract the quantities of materials and components to purchase.

## Context

The new Napoli Afragola station covers about 38,000 m². Designed by Zaha Hadid, it works alongside Napoli Centrale as an interchange node for high-speed trains.

Since 11 June 2017 the station has served 18 pairs of high-speed trains a day, connecting the new hub with all the main cities on the Turin–Salerno backbone, as well as Venice and Reggio Calabria. It has become a strategic node of the regional and national transport system and an opportunity to redesign and redevelop the surrounding area.

Zaha Hadid's design responds to the engineering and architectural requirements of FS Italiane. The station is no longer just a place travellers pass through, but a civic space where people meet.

## BIMON's scope

BIMON supported site management and the construction design of the station's building services for Astaldi S.p.A. The team created the BIM model of the whole system and extracted from it all the quantities needed for the bill of quantities, checking the metric calculations against the model.

The model was used to identify and resolve interferences before work started. Physical overlaps between structures and building services were coordinated about two weeks in advance of construction. A simulation of the entire work on a constructive BIM model helped avoid unforeseen events on site.

## Results

### BIM management for construction design

The BIM model made it possible to find interferences and check metric calculations, coordinating overlaps between structures and services about two weeks in advance.

### Construction simulation

A simulation of the entire work on a constructive BIM model helped avoid unforeseen events during construction.

### Project optimization

The BIM approach significantly optimized the project and improved the planning of construction activities, giving better control of time and costs.

- BIM model of the whole station system
- Support to site management
- Construction design of building services
- Quantities extracted for the bill of quantities
- Clashes between structures and services coordinated two weeks ahead
- Construction simulated on a constructive BIM model
