# WTE Trieste Trigeneration Plant

> Hera Group's trigeneration plant in Trieste was renovated and expanded to make room for new machines and equipment. BIMON created and coordinated all digital models and simulated the construction phases and methods of every component in the project.

## Context

Trieste has a long tradition of managing waste through energy recovery plants. Today the city is served by Errera 3, a waste-to-energy incinerator that converts the heat of combustion into clean energy.

Errera 3 grew out of Errera 2, which ran two incineration lines of 204 tonnes of waste per day each and a thermal cycle for energy recovery feeding a 4.85 MW steam turbine, producing 32 GWh of electricity per year.

The original plant was modernised with a third waste treatment line and an entirely new thermal cycle serving all three lines, with a 14.9 MW steam turbine able to produce 100 GWh per year.

## BIMON's scope

BIMON was tasked with creating and coordinating all digital models and simulating the construction phases and methods of the project's components. We supported the client with Project BIM Management consulting, meaning project planning, management and monitoring, and with BIM modelling in the construction phase.

By combining BIM models with construction simulations, we detected and resolved clashes before they became problems on site. Hera Group's approach let us optimise construction activities and keep the project on schedule.

Monitoring was planned around the needs of the job site, with surveys and up-to-date as-is models.

## Results

### Simulation and clash detection

BIM models and construction-phase simulations resolved clashes in advance and kept the work on schedule.

### Project BIM Management

Project planning, management and monitoring, with better coordination among all the professionals involved.

### Site monitoring

Accurate surveys and as-is models, with automated recognition and classification of elements.

- Early detection and resolution of clashes
- Better coordination among project professionals
- Optimised job order time and costs
- Accurate, detailed as-is models
- Stronger quality control and lower risk
- Efficient, accurate scanning
- Automated recognition and classification
