About

The site designated by the project, which has received a total of 40 million euros in funding, will be in the area of the Technopole of Bologna, owned by the Emilia-Romagna Region. The ECMWF Data Center will immediately be assigned an area of 9.000 sqm which can be further expanded, with another 6.000 sqm. BIMON worked alongside the municipality of Bologna by making digital models of the datacenter and verifying the coordination of the multidisciplinary project.

Project Background

The new Data Center is located within the pre-existing buildings named “Botti,” B1, B2, B3 and in building L1, “Officine,” where the transformation systems and uninterruptible power supplies are allocated. Completing the project is the newly constructed building L2, which houses the technological facilities.

History

The project for the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasting (ECMWF), the result of a tender called at the European level, won by the Italian proposal, is part of the broader urban redevelopment project of the former Manifattura Tabacchi, designed in the 1950s by Eng. Pierluigi Nervi and owned by the Emilia-Romagna Region. This manufacturing area, abandoned for 30 years, now houses the Tecnopolo of Bologna, which will have the function of promoting the circulation of scientific and technological knowledge, far beyond the regional territory, representing one of the main drivers of territorial development, capable of making Emilia-Romagna and the territory a hub of innovation at the European level.

 

The objective promoted by the client and carried out by all the actors involved was to create a Data Processing Center that is as sustainable as possible. In fact, the intervention looks not only at the importance of the function but at achieving high standards of sustainability through strategies to optimize the building’s energy performance, reduce water requirements, and reconnect with the surrounding context.

Results

Electrical systems construction design

BIMON created the structural and plant BIM model, starting from the laser scan survey and executive design.

Clash Detection and Code Checking

In order to verify the design prior to implementation, clash detection and code checking activities were conducted, aimed at the proper implementation and maintenance of the building.
