Infrastructures

Kilometres of works. One model.

BIMON builds integrated digital models of railways, bridges, stations and metro lines, with all the geometry and data needed to support design and construction. For complex works on so-called horizontal assets, such as bridges, highways, tunnels, rail lines and utility networks, an approach based on BIM and new digital tools is now indispensable.

The model lets teams see what will be built inside a simulated virtual environment. Everyone shares the same understanding of the project, potential problems surface early and errors are resolved before they reach the site.

For Impresa Pizzarotti we modelled the entire Naples-Bari high-speed line from the procurement stage, including bridges, viaducts, underpasses and tunnels. For Italferr we supported the management and coordination of all stations on Doha's Red Line North. For 3TI Progetti we digitised the existing and new Skurusund bridge in Sweden, and for Astaldi we optimised the construction of Zaha Hadid's Naples-Afragola station.

The challenges

01

Linear works over many kilometres

A rail line is a chain of bridges, viaducts, underpasses and tunnels that must fit together. On the Naples-Bari line, two 16 km sections, BIMON created the digital model of the whole line and then developed the full detailed design of the tunnels.

02

Constructability and phasing

Bridges and stations are built around traffic and existing structures. For Skurusund bridge, with a 99 m main span, BIMON linked the model to the construction programme in 4D to check the build sequence and feed back revisions to the schedule.

03

Structures and systems in the same space

Stations concentrate structural elements and plant in tight volumes. At Naples-Afragola the BIM model let the team coordinate physical overlaps between structures and systems about two weeks in advance.

04

Quantities that hold up

On infrastructure contracts, quantities drive both the bid and purchasing. BIMON extracts quantities from the model for metric calculations and cost estimates, as on Naples-Bari, Afragola and Skurusund.

Frequently asked questions

Can BIM be used for infrastructure as well as buildings?+

Yes. Bridges, rail lines, tunnels and stations benefit from the same coordinated model, clash detection and quantity extraction used on buildings. The IFC 4.3 schema also covers bridges, railways and roads, which makes openBIM exchange possible on linear works.

Is it worth introducing BIM at tender stage?+

On the Naples-Bari line BIMON refined Pizzarotti's technical bid by introducing BIM for the design and execution of the works. Using BIM design and BIM management from the bid made it possible to optimise the proposed improvements and verify the real savings in cost and construction time.

What do 4D and 5D add on a bridge or rail project?+

4D links model geometry to the construction programme and produces an animation of the build sequence, useful for constructability analysis. 5D exports model data for quantity take-off and cost estimation. BIMON used both on Skurusund bridge and the Naples-Bari line.

Where has BIMON worked on infrastructure?+

In Italy on the Naples-Bari high-speed line and the Naples-Afragola station, in Sweden on Road 222 and the new Skurusund bridge, and in Qatar on the Red Line North of the Doha Metro. Clients include Impresa Pizzarotti, Astaldi, Italferr and 3TI Progetti.
